This great American journey opens with Adolph describing what it was like to grow up in a large, Kansas Volga German farm family in the 1920s and 1930s. Good times, bad times, tragedy and hilarity all encompass the journey through life, like when the hogs were given hooch and partied like a reckless blue grass band. Then came the Great Depression and the hardships placed upon most families, such as picking cow chips for fuel. Worse, though, was when World War II erupted, yet it oddly gave Adolph his big chance to finally leave the farm and slopping hogs for a better life. Sent to the Hawaiian paradise of Oahu and Pearl Harbor in January 1941, he left one difficult world for another. That day changed Adolph from a young man to a twenty year OLD man, being almost killed several times. Today, he is now known as the "Hero of Pearl Harbor" for his exploits that day (thanks to his guardian angels) and has a famous Corbis photo to prove it. After meeting his wife to be at a San Francisco party and marrying her five months later, he was discharged in 1946 and proceeded to ply his ingrained, good old American grit in making a living for his wife and recently born son. Working at a variety of occupations, he worked his way through various ups and downs, never giving up, always striving to be his best, the way his old world parents wanted him to live his life. It was this "through pluck and luck" that led him to one of his most memorable moments in his life working on the classic film "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World," at the personal request of Stanley Kramer. Adolph stopped working at the age of 70 and started writing poetry and short stories, amongst other activities. He continues his diary to this day, some seventy-one years later. "Adolph Kuhn An American Journey" is a unique view of what the American Dream is all about family, struggle, perseverance.

I am prejudiced when it comes to Adolph Kuhn and his books of memories and detailed stories of his past. He is my wife's uncle! We spent many Thanksgivings with him and his now gone wife, Elsie, and were always enthralled and entertained by his stories of life on the farm in Kansas as well as his journeys through life. He is one of the few still surviving Pearl Harbor survivors and has been a keynote speaker at many December 7th memorials, the highlight of which was his journey to Hawaii to be the keynote speaker for the 70th memorial of that fateful day. This is his 4th book and probably the most detailed of them all. His previous books were privately printed and sold with the profits going to various Veterans Organizations, most notably the American Legion.
For insight into the hard farm life and his experiences through life in general, you could not ask for a better author!

I first met Adolph in a Wells Fargo Bank teller line in Manteca, California. I knew immediately that he was a Navy Vet due to the proud way in which he wore his Chief's cap...."The Hat," for the uninitiated. The photo the article references is the image of the lanky Sailor helping a gent from the ground as the USS Shaw explodes. My recollection is that Chief Kuhn was an Aviation Metalsmith, or Aviation Structural Mechanic. I have a signed copy of his first, I believe, compilation of his memoirs...Red covers with a plastic spiral binding. It is for the bravery of folks like Chief Kuhn that we have our Liberty, today. Fair Winds and Following Seas to the Chief!
I too totally enjoyed the book " An American Journey". Like John Klunder and Waynestaticlolva, who also wrote reviews on Adolph Kuhn's book, I too am related to Adolph. His Dad and my Grandfather, John, were brothers. Adolph and my Dad, Pete Kuhn", were 1st cousins. Adolph and I did not know of each others existence until three years ago.

By the way there is another good book , just released, on Pearl Harbor "A Matter of Honor". Interestingly the photo on the cover of this bookis of Adolph Kuhn. it appears at the bottom of the front cover. It's that same pic that appeared in National Geographic Magazine in the 1940's

It seems that John Klunder, Waynestaticulva and I have more in common than blood. I too am into tropical fish an

Best to you, distant relatives

Jim Kuhn
There is a reason they call these men "The Greatest Generation", what courage, strength, and a strong faith. I recommend this book to anybody.
Amazing interview-style book about an outstanding American hero.
I bought this for my Grandmother only because her son, my Uncle wrote the book. I'm sure she will enjoy it just as much as she enjoyed the rest of his books.
Great reading history book.
