First and only comprehensive analysis of the infamous Groveland, Florida rape case based on first-person interviews and extensive research. The true story (finally!) of a tragedy that began when a poor white girl accused four black men of rape.

Legal Lynching The Sad Saga of the Groveland Four Mr Gary Corsair 9781478288824 Books

A very detailed account of "The Groveland Four," and a look at racial hatred and racial bias for what it really was...perhaps even how it still is in some remaining minds and hearts, sadly.

To read this true story is to glimpse into the minds of those with deep seated racial hatred and racial bias. While I grew up in a state in the north, I have to say my understanding of conditions in the south was naive at best. I had no idea just how bad it was until reading this true story.

I see racial disparity in a new and more informed light now and as much as I was already against racial bias, this book showed me the horrible underbelly of racial hatred, racial bias, and corrupt judicial systems for what they really are and how much we all need to fight for justice and liberty for all.

To turn a blind eye to racial injustice against others means that injustice might one day be permitted against any of the rest of us at any time and for any reason too.

Legal Lynching The Sad Saga of the Groveland Four Mr Gary Corsair 9781478288824 Books Reviews

Hard to read due to the subject matter, but very well done.
I read this book and another one on the same topic. I would have given it 5 stars if it had included the FOI files. The files gave more insight into the case. Overall, it is written well and I enjoyed it
This is one sad story. This is not the America I want to live in. It seems like we've made progress until you hear people from the South talk about President Obama saying things like, "That boy's too uppity." There are some people that would like to return to a time when a sheriff could get away with a "legal lynching." Let's hope we never do.
This is my home town. I lived with a racist father that thought Willis McCall hung the moon.. I was too young to know about all this. The first thing I did after reading the first few chapters was call my mom. I wanted to know if my father had participated in the shooting in Stucky.. She said No. He and a friend started to but my granddaddy stopped them. I had known Joe and Ruby Maxwell all my life and loved them dearly. I graduated with his son. This story broke my heart. We are all Gods children. If Willis read the Bible he would have known the wisest king, King Solomon was black. I can just hear his reply to that one. I hope he made peace with God
This is by far one of the best books I've read in recent times. It was recommended to me by a fellow social worker to add to my summer reading list and I have been highly satisfied with it's contents.
I came across reviews for Legal Lynching after reading several reviews of the recent biography of Thurgood Marhall and was led to this title, and very glad about reading this book. It reads like a blend of history and a novel. Numerous characters and personalities are introduced, antagonist and protagonist are part of the story with numerous sub-characters. Interspersed with each chapter are excerpts from Florida and northern newspapers providing a national view of the events and how the nation viewed the trial. The articles also provide insight to

With the numerous lynchings and trials leading to executions why did Corsair select this particular event. After reading the Legal Lynching the answer is obvious, this story involves every aspect of four innocent men who claimed to have raped a white woman. One of the black men was killed while being arrested, and three others were tortured, jailed, and
tried. While they were fortunate to receive excellent lawyers through the NAACP their trials was a sham and not legal
justice. It presents a perfect example of a kangaroo court during the Jim Crow period. An appeal case proved not to be much better.

The leading event took place in Lake County, Florida starting in 1949...
The recent Pulitzer win for Gilbert King's Devil in the Grove got me interested in the Groveland case, which lead me to Gary's website and this book. The author has spent his entire life in the area, and spent years researching and then writing and teaching about the case. Its a great read and covers from start to finish the entire frightening story.

If you, like me, knew nothing about the case, its a great place to start as the book's focus is totally on providing the reader with an understanding of what happened and why. The author is a newspaperman, and it shows. He does a great job painting clear pictures of the personalities and motivations of all the participants and leaving you wanting to read more at the end of each chapter. I read the whole thing in 2 days, and do not do that often. I am now psyched to read King's book which provides a different, broader, perspective.

NOTE that this version is a re-issue/update of the original The Groveland Four The Sad Saga of a Legal Lynching There are more reader reviews there...and it seems most readers liked it as much as I did.
