In an age when the mighty Forces of Nature rule, the eternal battle between Fire and Water flares into war. The evil Fire, fueled by ancient jealousies and a lust for power, commits the ultimate treachery - the theft of the Waterglobe. Equilibrium between the Forces is lost, leaving a drought-plagued world that only one brave human can restore. Robert Ground, longing for adventure, lives in a peaceful, sleepy little village. One day, Fire appears, laying to waste everything Robert has ever known. Determined to find out why he has become a target of the Prime Evil, Robert begins a journey to uncover his family’s secrets, and soon discovers a link between his past and the elemental battle waging around him. Robert is joined by the lovely, secretive Marian as they forge an unlikely partnership. Unknown to Robert, Marian is a fireling, and Fire’s cruelest, most loyal apprentice. As Marian pursues her own dark mission, two others join the travelers Gider, the vicious, coarse fermad, and Shine, the brave and noble rainsteed.
Reaching the Cloud Realm, Robert is tasked with an impossible mission, one that will test him beyond the limits of his endurance. The four adventurers navigate the perilous realms of the Forces, gathering powerful weapons for the final battle with Fire. Each is forever altered, as they must choose between self-sacrifice and treachery. Ultimately, Robert faces Fire and finally learns why he is destined to fight the ultimate evil...

Full disclosure: I was chosen a First Reads winner, and received a free paperback copy of Reign of the Black Flame: The Waterglobe, written by B.B. Vayk. I poured over it eagerly and could definitely see what other readers and reviewers are beginning to rave about!

What an imaginative first volume in this new series! I loved the personifications of the Forces of Nature, as well as their lyrical descriptions. The contrasts between those differing elements of nature (such as water, sun, fire, night, etc.) and their unique lands are vividly painted and easy to imagine, in what we might refer to as a cinematographic sense. I also enjoyed reading a "first volume" that tells a complete story in itself and, even though there are definitely parts of the story left to unfold, this first book comes to a logical conclusion (which isn't often true these days, when so often an author will write a story and them seemingly divide it into three books merely to keep customers purchasing them). The Waterglobe lives up to its title. (OK, I am being intentionally vague about that; no spoilers!)

Those of you, like one of my writer-reviewer friends, Nancy Brady, who have observed a trend toward green-eyed characters will be pleased to observe that Robert, the protagonist, does have green eyes. His development and journey parallel the story of the Waterglobe and provide an exciting way to keep the reader involved. The other characters, like Robert, are well-developed and also grow throughout the tale.

I read on her website that B.B. Vayk (who is of Hungarian ancestry) described the process of beginning to write this new YA series, once she was married and had children of her own, like this: "One day, during a rainy afternoon of writing, the hero of my story appeared on the page. Robert, a young man, with no real purpose to his life beyond living in a small sleepy village where nothing ever happened. That village was much like the one where my own grandparents lived; just as simple, just as peaceful, and where I spent many holidays as a child. Robert was clever and talented, but his abilities were not really needed in the human world in which he lived. Then, I created Marian, Robert’s adversary. Beautiful yet cruel, alluring yet evil; I really enjoyed her character! They represented two different worlds and together forged a strange, yet necessary partnership, as they journeyed through an age of castles, kings, knights and war, all ruled by the mighty forces of nature."

Treat yourself to The Waterglobe -- an epic fantasy that won't disappoint.

Reign of the black flame The Waterglobe eBook BB Vayk Reviews

Reign of the Black Flame is a beautifully written fantasy novel. The story follows Robert and Marian and a few others as they work together and sometimes for their own ends, during a time of war between Fire and Water, the Forces of Nature. With conflicting interests, the group must face the powerful and evil Fire.

What really set this book apart for me was the quality of writing. Vayk writes with great description, and has truly created a whole new world for his characters to live in. It was entertaining just learning more about the world, he really brought the Fire and Water realms to life. Definitely one of the best fantasy books I have read lately, I look forward to following the story!
I received a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Fire and Water don't mix and in this fantasy world, it is made apparent. The world that B.B. Vayk creates is so creative, so complete, so complex that this novel was a pleasure to read. The cleverness of names of creatures in every realm is just one of the many joys of this book. The descriptions of the places are just as rich. The cover is fantastic, yet doesn't do justice to the story within.

Robert Ground's quest to recover the Waterglobe from Fire's realm is richly drawn as he and his companions, Marian, Gider, and Shine, journey together through the various Forces of Nature. Although the story is complete as is, this reader still looking forward to the next book in the series.

The few typos or proofreading errors were easily overlooked as the story is so compelling.

Full disclosure I received this novel directly from the author, but that in no way affected the review. But thanks again to B.B Vayk for the copy.

Sometimes you encounter a fantasy book so vividly and evocatively rendered that the while thing does not feel like “fantasy” at all—everything strikes you as “real,” and you’re completely taken in for the entire rollercoaster ride. That’s my experience with Tolkien’s books, and Terry Pratchett’s and Neil Gaiman’s—and now, also with B.B. Vayk’s ‘Reign of the Black Flame the Waterglobe’.

‘Reign of the Black Flame’ is, to put it in the mildest terms, “majestic” in its scope. Sure, using elemental powers in a novel’s plot is not new, but the author has surely set the bar higher as far as literary quality is concerned—this book is so intricately plotted, written in a language that is at turns beguiles you with its perfect prosody, and drops your jaws with its penetration of the small moments. The book is about a war between the elements of Fire and Water—all with their attendant symbolisms and respective loyalists—a war that is set to consume and devour everything in its path. The ravages of war and its collateral damage soon darken the doorstep of Robert Ground, inevitably pulling him into a vortex that can be both bad and good—good because he meets powerful allies, such as Marian, Gider and Shine and thereby gives him a chance to end the suffering; bad because things are not what they seem at first, and the very mission of defeating the evil Fire could demand the ultimate sacrifice.

As I’ve said, ‘Reign of the Black Flame’ is a wonderfully depicted story rendered in a writing language that delights you with not only its emotional gravitas but its vividness—the author has that uncanny attention to detail Vayk paints a world you can see clearly in your imagination, allowing you to completely inhabit this tale. This is a powerful literary achievement. Fans of the fantasy genre must not pass on this one get a copy today or send this as a gift to dear friends. Enjoyment guaranteed.
